What it measures
- Collections with no text or short text (under 50 words of description). To Google and to shoppers, a collection with no text is a grid of photos with no context.
- Empty collections: published, linked from your menu, and without a single product.
- Duplicate titles: two collections with the same name compete with each other for the same search.
- And a list to start with: the collections with the most products and the least text, which is where writing pays off most.
Why only the ones in your menu
Shopify publishes every collection on your store, including the internal ones: discount collections, Google Shopping feeds, and campaigns from two years ago. On a mid-sized store they're the majority. If we counted them, the result would be noise. Your menu is the signal for which ones matter, so we measure those and tell you how many internal ones were left out.
What to do with the results
Write the collections on the priority list first: a short paragraph at the top that says what's there and who it's for, and a longer one at the bottom with the criteria for choosing. Then link to them from the blog posts that talk about those products. That second part is the one almost nobody does, and it's the one that turns your blog into sales.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, and no app to install on your store.
How much text does a collection need?
There's no magic number. Under 50 words it almost never explains anything; with 100 or 200 well-written words that say what's there and how to choose, you're already ahead of most stores.
It says I don't publish my collection list. What does that mean?
Some stores restrict access to /collections.json or sit behind a firewall. It's not a problem with your store, but we can't measure it from the outside.
What does this have to do with my blog?
A lot: the collection is the page a post should lead the reader to. A post that links to an empty collection, or one with no text, loses the sale at the last step. The free diagnosis measures whether your posts reach your catalog.
