What changed in Shopify
On May 28, 2026, Shopify started publishing three files on every store: /agents.md, the main document for AI agents that shop on a buyer's behalf, plus /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, which are copies of it by default.
Shopify writes that text, not you. It explains how to use the cart, Shop Pay, and its integration with assistants. It doesn't explain what you sell, what your categories are, your shipping terms, or where your blog lives. If an assistant reads your llms.txt to understand your store, it finds checkout instructions.
How to add your own, no app needed
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and, on your published theme, open Edit code.
- In the
templatesfolder, create a new file calledllms.txt.liquid. - Paste your llms.txt inside (this tool builds one from your store's data), save, and open
yourstore.com/llms.txtto check it.
Why llms.txt.liquid and not agents.md.liquid
If you edit agents.md.liquid, you change all three files at once, including the one agents use to buy from your store. With llms.txt.liquid you change only the llms.txt, and the rest stays as Shopify maintains it. It's the safe choice.
One technical detail: that template can't read your collections or blog posts with Liquid. The text is written as is, so if your categories change, you have to update it by hand.
What it checks (and what it doesn't)
It checks
- Whether your
/llms.txtand/agents.mdare Shopify's default text or your own. - If yours is your own, whether it names your categories, your policies (shipping, returns), and your blog.
- Whether your site runs outside the Shopify theme (headless), where the template doesn't apply.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, and no app to install on your store.
Can I upload an llms.txt to Shopify?
Yes. Since May 2026 you do it with a theme template called llms.txt.liquid, with no apps and no access to your domain root. The steps are above.
Do I need to touch agents.md?
No. The agents.md file is what agents read when they buy from your store, and Shopify keeps its version up to date. Change only the llms.txt.
My store is headless. What do I do?
If your site is served by Hydrogen or another frontend, the file is published on that frontend, like any other file at the root. The Shopify theme template doesn't reach it.
